Your mind matters: The relationship between academic culture and mental health
Join us for a workshop exploring mental health in academia as part of Future Physiology 2020. Lecturer Francesco Tamagnini will be joined by post-doc Cristiana Bercea, and Ben Bleasdale from the Wellcome Trust to discuss the relationship between undergraduate and post-graduate career development and the onset of mental health disorders.
The main questions they will look to answer are: 1) Is there a mental health disorder epidemic in HE/academic research? 2) What is the cause/causes? 3) What is being done about it?

After finding my interest in glia I took up the offer of a PhD looking at their metabolic interactions with axons. My research focuses on Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system as well as astrocytes of the central nervous system using techniques including stimulus evoked compound action potential electrophysiology, lactate biosensors and fluorescent immunohistochemistry. In addition to lab work, I also enjoy supervising and teaching undergraduate students as well as communicating science more broadly through outreach activities.

I have actively been involved in research and teaching of Physiology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels within and outside the Department of Physiology. The students populace spans across the following departments; Anatomy, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Sciences, M.B., B.S. and Nursing.
Our environment, occupation and diet expose us to various toxicants which are major contributing factors in the etiology of various diseases through the generation of reactive oxygen species. Imbalance between the body’s antioxidant system and the production of reactive oxygen species in the human body alters a lot of physiological functions.
Therefore, my research activities focus on the effect/s of flavonoids containing fruits/seeds (good sources of antioxidant) on both gastrointestinal diseases and heavy metal induced-toxicity on various vital organs. Abimbola Adelaja is a Nigerian trained Veterinary Surgeon.
